Who We Are

Our History

YWCA Metro St. Louis was founded in 1904 to provide safe housing for individuals coming to work in St. Louis during the World’s Fair. The organization began by addressing practical needs while the city hosted tens of thousands of visitors for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition.

Since its founding, YWCA Metro St. Louis has evolved to meet the community’s changing needs. Key milestones include opening the Phyllis Wheatley Branch in 1941, expanding programs and housing, and relocating to modern facilities to continue providing safe spaces and supportive services for individuals and families. Today, YWCA serves approximately 10,000 people annually.

Who We Are

More important than the numbers is our commitment to supporting individuals and families through programs and services that promote safety, stability, and opportunity. We provide safe spaces, help build skills, and connect people to the resources they need to thrive.

People turn to YWCA Metro St. Louis for a variety of needs—whether facing housing or family challenges, seeking education for their children, or accessing programs that support career and life skills. They leave with practical tools, greater confidence, and stronger foundations for the future.

Our Mission

YWCA Metro St. Louis is dedicated to empowering individuals, families and survivors by facilitating a future where every person is safe, supported, and heard.
